Genesis 5: Adam’s Descendants to Noah

1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. 2 Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created.

-This is one of the books people tend to skip when it comes to bible reading. “so and so begot so and so, yeah whatev!” But its highly important to be included in the bible for several reasons. These first two verse restate God’s authority and divinity before showing the genealogy that lead to Noah. This is saying that God is in control and God guided these people to be born and that He is truly the “Father” of mankind as He puts Himself at the top of the genealogy. It also shows God uses a wide variety of different people in his plan, some more righteous than others and it provides proof that this isn’t just some fairy tale created by Moses or some really smart Hebrews some time in the early days of Israel. These are actual people and many may have had stories of their ancestors that have been passed down that they see verified in this genealogy. They also seem to show that even God Himself considers family highly important, as should we.

3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. 4 The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters.

-Wait a minute, Adam was 130 years when he fathered Seth? And he lived to be 800 years old? I remember as a child hearing this for the first time totally confused. It sounds preposterous that people could live that long even if really healthy. But I had to ask myself, if this really is all made up and whoever wrote this wants people to believe its true, why include this? They aren’t claiming if you believe hard enough you live longer or some other benefit, they are stating it as recorded fact. That’s it. Why include it? Wouldn’t it make things less believable? Over time even within these few generations we see people live less and less long, why is that? The theory proposed as to how people can live so long is twofold: 1) The early humans were made physically “perfect” in terms of their genetics and DNA. Over time, we can scientifically prove a genetic degradation with every new generation and so in some sense we are becoming “less human” over time and less healthy. 2) In the creation account we are told that the water was separated between the Earth and the Heavens. Unless this simply refers to clouds, the account may be describing a literal body of water in the sky that use to exist before the flood. Creationist scientists have researched into what effects such a thing might have on our climate and one proposed effect would be protection from elements of space that can be harmful to life and shorten lifespan. These scientists proposed people and all life would have lived much longer and lifeforms would have grown much larger as well. This may be where the concept of 10 foot tall giants came from, perhaps the early humans were all giants this tall. This would also allow reptiles to grow much larger which may explain dinosaurs and why they don’t exist anymore. Perhaps dinosaurs needed the water layer in the atmosphere to live and once it fell in the flood, the new less protected atmosphere could not maintain the life of these creatures any longer. Perhaps this was God’s plan to eliminate a threat to mankind now that we would shrink to between 5-7 ft and not be as tall or strong to handle dinosaurs. Obviously not all dinosaurs were large which is one of the reasons why this is only a theory and we may never know the real truth in this life.

5 Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died. 6 When Seth had lived 105 years, he fathered Enosh. 7 Seth lived after he fathered Enosh 807 years and had other sons and daughters. 8 Thus all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died.

-We know “adam” means man, “seth” means compensation, and “enosh” is another word for man.

9 When Enosh had lived 90 years, he fathered Kenan. 10 Enosh lived after he fathered Kenan 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11 Thus all the days of Enosh were 905 years, and he died.

-The name “Kenan” is very similar to “Cain” in Hebrew and means “possession”.

12 When Kenan had lived 70 years, he fathered Mahalalel. 13 Kenan lived after he fathered Mahalalel 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14 Thus all the days of Kenan were 910 years, and he died.

-The name “Mahalalel” means “praise of God”.

15 When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he fathered Jared. 16 Mahalalel lived after he fathered Jared 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17 Thus all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years, and he died.

-The name “Jared” means “descent”

18 When Jared had lived 162 years he fathered Enoch. 19 Jared lived after he fathered Enoch 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20 Thus all the days of Jared were 962 years, and he died.

-The name “Enoch” means “dedicated”

21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah.

-The name “Methuselah”means “man of the dart” but could also mean “his death shall bring judgment”.

22 Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years. 24 Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.

-Twice it says Enoch “walked with God” and then it says he “was not, for God took him”. In every father and son listing we have the same formula: This person had this son at this age, had other sons and daughters, all the days were this many then he died. For Enoch, we don’t have that. It just says God “took him”. We can’t assume this is a more poetic way of saying that he died because this is a genealogical account, very factual. They say everyone else died. Why not him? This is a great mystery until we see what happens to Elijah later in 2 Kings. A chariot appeared and he was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elijah did not experience death. It seems this account is saying Enoch was also privileged to not experience death and was taken straight to heaven by God. One of the most prominent theories to the purpose of these two individuals in the bible not dying is their use in end time events as the two witnesses. The two witnesses are not identified although they are called “prophets of God”. We don’t know much about Enoch but Elijah was certainly a prophet of God but the Book of Revelation does not say they come from the past and could instead be two people that are alive during the time the events will take place in the future.

25 When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he fathered Lamech. 26 Methuselah lived after he fathered Lamech 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27 Thus all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died.

-The name “Lamech” means “powerful” and he is not to be confused with the Lamech from Cain’s line who had two wives. Methuselah has the record for the longest living human ever to exist.

28 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son 29 and called his name Noah, saying, “Out of the ground that the Lord has cursed, this one shall bring us relief from our work and from the painful toil of our hands.” 30 Lamech lived after he fathered Noah 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31 Thus all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died.

-The name “Noah” means “rest”. It is interesting that this prophesy about Noah by his father is included. That fact that Noah did indeed have a great destiny may mean Lamech was given a vision or told by God that Noah had a special part to play. The fact that his name means “rest” and Lamech speaks of “relief” from the curse on the ground further shows this. For those who are into numbers, Lamech lived 777 years. The number 7 is considered God’s number and many miraculous events are related to the number 7. The fact that he lived that many years might show that Lamech was also a righteous man who walked with God or at least was touched by God in some way.

32 After Noah was 500 years old, Noah fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

-The name Shem means “name”, Ham means “hot”, and Japheth means “opened” in Hebrew.

Spanish words:

semejanza = similarity, resemblance, in someone’s image

desaparecer = to disappear

aliviar = to relieve, sooth, alleviate

maledecir = to curse

1) If we are to add up the ages of everyone when each next son in line was born then we can say that Noah was born 1,056 years after the creation of the world. This would mean Adam and Seth had died but Enosh and everyone else younger were still living at the time.

2) Using the same math, the flood would have happened 1,656 years after the creation of the world. As it turns out, this would have been the exact year Methuselah died. In “The Book of Enoch” which is not included in the bible, Enoch had named his son Methuselah meaning “his death shall bring judgment” because Enoch received a prophesy by God that on the day of his death, mankind would be destroyed. In the Epistle of Jude which is included in the 66 books in the bible, Jude references a passage in the Book of Enoch in verse 14 and 15: “Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about them: ‘See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone, and to convict all of them of all the ungodly acts they have committed in their ungodliness, and of all the defiant words ungodly sinners have spoken against him’.” There are many numerous reasons why the Book of Enoch is not considered inspired scripture largely because Jude’s letter is the only time it is ever referenced in other scripture and it contains many events that are unique only to this book.

3) Some of the meanings of names are not entirely clear but there are many who believe there is a code hidden in the meaning of names. For Seth’s line, the names could be translated into the following: “The God-man is appointed; a man of sorrow is born! The Glory of God shall come down from heaven and teach men that by means of His death, He shall bring comfort and rest to those who mourn.” Whether this has any meaning is open to interpretation.
